The Infrastructure of the Internet as seen from the North Pole
To the majority of us the Internet is an unseen Technology that beams information to and from servers, we merely expect that what we type in, whether it be a URL address, a search term or something we click on, to appear and preferably quickly.
To actually map the Internet it would take the help of Internet providers around the world so we can actually see for ourselves what the Internet actually looks like. Mapping out a visual image that can be seen from the North Pole of what we have become heavily reliant on to host websites, search keywords and social network, better known as the Internet, and it has taken two men and one company to uncover the ability to show the world how we physically interconnect.
A writer for Fortune, Andrew Blum and Graphic Designer, Nicolas Rapp teamed up with Telecom Data Company, GeoTel Communications to relinquish an artful look at the web. Truly visualizing the truthfulness of why we do call the Internet “The World Wide Web” since it does indeed look like spun web.
Daily the world population on the web is increasing and as of the 24 of October of this year (10 days ago), it is estimated that there are 9.13 billion pages on the Internet. This growing phenomenon is built by fiber optic cables that lay deep beneath the oceans in which light travels across the cables until it reaches land (The Coast), where landing stations receive the transmitted light.
It is then that the information is sent to what are known as Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) where Internet providers exchange the information between their networks.
The Internet can sure be a fun place for us to surf and uncover information, not to mention the ability it has given us to grow socially too. It is also providing a growth on our Global economy, which connects us even further.
It is amazing to think that what we use daily looks so beautiful, as the infrastructure of the Internet is seen from the North Pole.
