Is Facebook Shutting Down March 15 2012?
Is it true? Has Facebook’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg succumb to the pressure of maintaining the social network? Perhaps the threat of Google+ has him wanting to give up rather than to fight for hierarchy.
Truthfully, the answer now is “I don’t know”, however, it has moved on from a “rumor” to articles reporting (such as this article, written by Follow Technology) who is confirming that Facebook will close down come March 15 2012.
What further concerns me, as a Facebook specialist and admitted addict, are the quotes within the article, they leave me questioning the credibility of whether the confirmation is in fact true.
Here is why…
Why would Zuckerberg simply shut down the site entirely? Why would he not sell it and make a profit, or step down as CEO, if he was truly tired of the site? After all, it is a highly sought after business and many would jump at the chance to purchase the site and keep it alive.
What will happen to all of his employees? Nothing in the “confirmed” article mentions any concern regarding his employees – that is odd since the company is supposedly “shutting down”.
This quote truly arose some suspicion – “I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”
Would Zuckerberg really suggest people to go outside and make “real” friends? Especially since, he has garnered much success around expanding outside of Facebook and making the web a “social” atmosphere.
In addition, I am in shock, over the idea that Zuckerberg would give up so easily, from what I have seen in his persona through online conferences and on Facebook Live, this just does not seem to sit right. With that said, there have been many predictions that Facebook would shut down in two years, however, through this announcement it is reporting that we simply have a year left to Facebook our hearts out.
Personally, I question this announcement in its entirety and so should you. It is just too odd for an announcement of a rumor that has been swirling for months, receive confirmation so closely after Google+ has been unleashed.
Until Facebook themselves release an article or a press release, we should not jump too quickly at believing that the most successful Social Network will be closing the book on us, just yet.
