The smash K-Pop hit, Gangnam style not only brought much attention to its star, Psy, a well-known rapper in Asia, it brought with it, a global attraction to the Asian Music Industry. With a music video uploaded on YouTube, Gangnam Style grabbed the Internet by its horns and has everyone wanting to do the “horse dance”. But was it a coincidence, or was their strategy behind the hit?

The K-Pop star, Psy is now world famous, has the most popular K-Pop video of all-time, is #2 on the Billboard charts, has had over 600 million YouTube views and is the very first Korean artist to attain global success. All of this fame from one video uploaded onto YouTube? Yes.

Creating a viral video cannot be strategically planned, you can only assume what the Internet likes from what is seen as popular right now, trying to aim at a specific demographic based on researching the interests of the majority of the web can sure help exposure of a video designed to appease them. However, it is never guaranteed to go viral.

With that said, a video of this nature did take some strategic planning, after all, Psy is a singer and would need to expose the video in a business oriented way. Like any business one must choose how to market due to targeting, demographics and forms of publication to generate word of mouth marketing which is known today as the “share button”.

Today’s consumer approves of comic schemes, a laugh never ages or goes out of style, and therefore a business can use this to their advantage. Capitalizing on having fun is preferred over being too serious, which we have seen this success before with examples from Old Spice, Skittles and Ford.
